Left Behind

She walks along the shore alone tonight.
The sand beneath her feet is cool to touch;
Soft waves roll in to paint a calming sight,
But in her heart, emotions weigh too much.

Fresh tears, white-hot, escape from eyes squeezed shut
And stream down cheeks, stained red from cryings past.
With one love lost, she asks the night, “And what
Is done for those whose lives are meant to last?”

No answer seems to greet her ears just yet,
And so she waits with nothing more to say.
Beneath the stars and moon, she lies to let
The tears flow free and cries the night away.

Death frees the hurting souls but leaves behind
A pain remaining of the hardest kind.
