Protecting me

Black streams my face as you hold me and curse yourself. You cloak me in plate armor, but fear that it won't be strong enough, so you leave me with a broken heart for protection.
You cloud yourself with smoke as I take to my pen and we try to cope.
You fear your own bite, so you push me away as you wrap me in your arms.
The company you keep keeps you inflamed in threats, so you protect me the only way you know how; you hurt me.
