Just for tonight,
I let a little shimmer of hope arise

he turns away from
bottle blondes
gaping shirts and too small skirts
begging for a
quick
easy
one

and He tells me to
keep
on
laughing

He tells me to never fall

He tells me to look him in the eye
grabs my hand swiftly
and make him promise I won’t.

He tells me he's 25.

I croak jail bait.

And it’s all over;
he’s gone

because I’m just the girl
in the Johnny Cash tee shirt and striped footless tights
with my knock-off converses.

and then the last fireworks
scream their pride
as
confident arms
grasp
awkward shoulders

“Hold my wrist,"
taunts my ears

And before I can even blink
he’s body is next to mine
he wraps himself around me

protecting me from the flashes of cameras
the screams of the fans
the chords of the guitarss

and with the crash of the drum
and the beat of the bass
My shirt is too tight,
My mouth is sticky,
My words come out like I want them too.

And his head gets closer to mine
his hot breath tickles my neck
as he whispers

“Look at them,
they staring at us.”
