Forgive to Forget

Forgive to Forget
There use to be two girls
They were inseparable, at least.
They were thick as thieves,
And devoted to one another.
But the taller girl was mean,
And she broke the shorter girl’s heart.
[into a million razor-edged pieces]
She stabbed her back,
So hard it broke the short girl’s spine
And the girl never even saw it coming.
But life went on for them both.
She stood out with her heavy heart,
And the tall girl faded into the background,
With her trusty knife still handy.
They didn’t speak to each other.
They didn’t look at one another.
They sort of lived in separate universes.
But in the back of the shorter girl’s mind,
Lurked the idea that ‘friends forever’ was real.
She honestly wanted to be friends again
But she just didn’t know how to do it.
So she continued the silent treatment
And when she got old and gray,
On her deathbed she did confess,
That she was sorry and that it was all her fault.
