Stars

I was walking outside,
just to get something from our car.
Boy, did they catch my eye.

Stars.
Hundreds of stars,
glittering like fairies in the night.
It's been two years
since I laid eyes on them.

I gasped with delight,
but mostly shock.
How the stars were able,
to beat their way through all the Florida lights,
was beyond me.
But they were there.

The stars were all I saw,
nothing else.
Not the world around me.
suddenly, I could feel the rough
little rocks against my freezing
bare feet.

I could feel the gentle breeze,
I could hear the TV inside our litte barn house,
I could feel the touch of grass between my fingers.
I could hear my dog smelling the grass,
outside our little barn house.
I could feel the England cold.
Not the Florida heat.

I could hear noises inside the other little barns,
there were not many.
I could hear my friend,
inside the house beckoning me inside,
for she wanted to play.

I belonged here.
Not where I once was.
I was finally,
after two long years,

home.

The stars took me there.
