Shades of Gray to Shade of Green

I know who you are.

I know what we are.
Do you?
Do we?

We are smudges on the canvas,
incomplete charcoal portrait
particles of dust, trickling down,
trailing gray on the smoothe, clean paper.

We are Nothing without each smudge.
We are Everything with.
Uniqueness is unachievable
No matter how we try.

In attempting to point out the minor differences,
we only separate hearts instead.
In trying to relentlessly to push ourselves up,
we crush down others instead.

Inside, we are all the same color,
the same shape, face, person, even,
under the microscope.
Under the microscope, we're all grains.

And maybe, just maybe,
we will realize this seemingly miniscule, but colossal fact.
We will stand tall and still,
proud of ourselves for figuring out the Great Mystery
of why we live on this peaceless piece of paper.

And like all blank portraits,
maybe one day we will have color.
And when the Painter smiles and deems us ready,
We will suck in our breath and wait for the rewarding dash of Green.
