Eyes Like Tide Pools

There's a sad song behind every motion of your limbs
swimming through your bed at night
the pale sheets rise around you like halos,
like translucent creatures with lace and ribbon candy
trailing from their bodies.

I listened to your nakedness from the other room
and felt you better than if I were there,
our hands were lissome telephones
we drifted through every subdivision
slipping through a thousand filaments.

You faced the sun from under the water
holding you like a breath,
our mouths disconnected and floated on the median,
animals like sheets of paper
waved from beneath your coldness.
