Naivety is a Dangerous Thing

I was young, and so naïve,
Looking for a place to belong.
You were standing there, you took me in,
You offered me friendship and a place in life.
It was all going so well when you said
“Can you keep a secret?”
And I said “Yes.”
That’s when it all fell apart, as we shared our lives and dreams
And you betrayed me.

Chorus;
It felt like home for a little while,
It felt safe for a little while.
But then you threw it all away for a little enjoyment,
Hell, I don’t know, only you know why.
The fact is, you told so many lies.

I shared myself; I’d never done that before,
I trusted you, like I’d never trusted before.
You said “Your secrets are safe with me,
They’ll come to no harm here.”
If only I had known that wasn’t to be,
If only I had known what you’d do to me.

Chorus;

I found out it was you,
You were the one that hurt me.
You were the one that lied to me.
You spread those lies, like ink in a pond,
Until the world turned its back on me.
I don’t know what you got out of it,
Because the day you did it,
Was the day you lost us.
There were many of us at the start,
They all followed you, they all worshipped you.
But you threw it away, and you’ll never get it back.

Chorus;

It was all going so well when you said
“Can you keep a secret?”
And I said “Yes.”
