Ode to Chocolate

Chocolate, oh chocolate, my most dear, consistent friend!
Although at times I do not pine for your sweet, bitter taste,
Through it all, I know that I’ll always love you to the end.
And, when the chocolate itch grips me in the greatest haste,
I find sublime tranquility in the ethylamine you send
Along with carbohyderates all serotonin laced.

Hershey kisses, caramel treasures - it doesn’t matter which -
They wrap my tongue in silken spun, sugary-coated sheets.
Chocolate eggs, peanut butter cups - anything dark and rich -
They gently sigh, on teeth they die, these lovely dark-brown treats.
Twix bars, Andes mints, and creamy hot chocolate - do bewitch
My taste buds with your mood soothing and memory boosting sweets.

Some would say that you should be a sole forbidden pleasure.
They do not know that your cacoa, fights off my tooth decay.
In Mexico, bronchitis and insect bite displeasure
Are healed with an often concealed milk-chocolate interplay.
Your sav’ry smell makes brainwaves swell - a relieving measure.
The life of men are long again thanks to this gift, some say.
And this is why I call my friend a life-improving treasure!
