imaginary friend

I threw my teddies all around.
I banged my little fists on the ground.
I cried and screamed and kicked and spat.
Until my imaginary friend came back.

his name was Eddie and he was tall.
he was fun and we had a ball.
he was green but I wasn’t scared of him.
he was really massive, but somehow quite slim.

Eddie was so darn ace.
and we went to the beach and outer space.
but one day while hiking in the forest,
Eddie called out and got lost.

I couldn’t see his long, blue tail.
and his footprints didn’t lead anywhere down the dirt trail.
the glow from his head had somehow dimmed,
maybe it would’ve been easier if the bushes were trimmed.

for six weeks I waited at the front door.
but no sign of that cheeky roar.
I even made him his favourite roast pumpkin lunch.
but no sign of that enormous much.

when I grew up I forgot about my friend.
I forgot about our trips and the times we would spend.
my contacts grew boring and sappy.
and never again was I so happy.

I threw my teddies all around.
I banged my little fists on the ground.
I cried and screamed and kicked and spat.
But my imaginary friend never came back.
