In memory of my great grandma

Why Can’t I Forget You

You’re nobody special
Just another guy
You’re not even handsome
You cheat and you lie
You’ve given me nothing
With you it was take
So you take my heart
Not to love but to break

Why can’t I forget you
God knows that I’ve tried
The days I have wondered
The days I have cried
Still I remember the
Fist day we met
To the last time I saw you
Why can’t I forget

A Baby’s Kiss

I have thrilled at the sight of a waterfall,
Of a jet plane in the air,
A gorge of a glorious magnitude,
A beautiful gem so rare

I have traveled many, many, roads,
And sailed the seven seas,
Felt the force of a hurricane,
The caress of a gentle breeze

I have read the books of writers great,
And pondered works of art
Shakespeare, Wagner, and Ruisdael
They all have touched my heart

Yet- for the thrill of a lifetime,
Perfection, no one should miss,
There is nothing in the whole wide world
To equal a baby’s kiss

No Bigots

I attend a playground party
About thirty children were there
Of many different religions
They ranged from dark to fair

But the color of eyes, the color of skin
Bothered them not at all
Their judgment rested solely
On how well he could throw a ball

How well he could mix with others
How well he could win with grace
How well he could lose with dignity
Not by his religion or race

And as I watch them playing
This thought occurred to me
If we could carry this creed to mankind
What a grand world this would be

Existence Of God

Stop and look around you
This is what you’ll see:
The glory of a sunrise,
The leaves upon a tree,
The flowers in the garden,
A brook so freely flowing

Then- look across into the fields,
Where the wheat and oats are growing
At the smile upon the farmer’s face,
As he gently turns the sod
Then- tell me-
How can anyone doubt,
The existence of God

Mother Of The Bride

There’s a hustle and a bustle
Around our house these days
Mom does all the planning
But of course, it’s pop that pays

The telephone keeps ringing,
While the door chimes play their tune
Demands are made upon our time,
We hope it’s over soon

Appointments are being made in advance,
The seamstress is kept busy
The mail is coming in so fast
It has the postman dizzy

In spite of this confusion,
Mom takes it in her stride
She knows the one that must be calm-
The mother if the bride

Progress

Great grandpa had the covered wagon
Grandpa had the lizzie
Papa had the airplane
But these spaceships have me dizzy

To Earle

I searched through all the card shops
And could not find a card
Worthy of my love for you
Though I tried very hard

So now I have my pen in hand
But no matter how I try
The only words that I can write
Are- I’ll love you till I die

God’s children

Remember when our first child was born,
How thrilled we were, and proud,
And how we planned his future,
As we sailed on our rosy cloud

We talked about the friends he’d make
And we were sure we knew
At just what sports he would excel
And what career he’d choose

Now- as we watch him with his son,
We smile a secret smile

For we know now
We don’t own our sons
God just lends them to us for a while
