Without Fear

I taste a fire which warms the sky
I smell the wood burning hot and dry
I hardly feel the ashes settle on my skin
Lighter than feathers and whiter than plastic
I know the fire burns
But it's miles away
Only the ashes' turns
Show signs of the decay

I taste it, smell it, feel the heat
And my eyes water in the smoke
I watch the ashes dance
But my world is just the same
I know of a burned last chance
But I've never seen the flames

I hear the whistle of the bombs
The force of impact rattles knobs
The smell of burning bodies sickens me
What a frightful sight that must be
I know the people scream
Never met them before
The stench of death haunts me
I won't step out my door

I hear it, feel it, smell the fear
And the nausea is setting in
I know the world has come apart
But I am safe in here
As long as I don't play a part
I will live without fear
