I'm Loving Angels Instead; David Archuleta's Debut Album
There's a place in the world for uncomplicated - some might even say uninspired - musical statements, and that place is "American Idol." It's where singers that are gifted with steady pitch, good looks, and endearing personalities compete for the fame and fortune, however briefly, into the national spotlight.
David Archuleta, 2008's second-place winner and one of the show's youngest stars, released his debut album last year and it came as no surprise that the singer's self-titled collection was built on the wholesome innocence and simplicity that won over millions of "AI" fans. Overflowing with exceptional choruses, these piano-based songs communicate in a slow ballad way that is just a right tone for a 17-year-old boy with a once-in-a-decade pop voice: a soft tenor with a sweet and natural melody that makes him a heartbreaker in default. His charming debut exploits that outstanding quality with a stroke of pop genius, like the 2nd track “Touch My Hand”.
"Crush," the first single and lead track, and now a hit single, sets a template from which Archuleta rarely strays: thoughtful, love songs that explore – again, age-appropriately for teens. “Barriers”, he’s separated from his love by walls and locks and roadblocks. The 6th track, “You Can”, means that he needs her so he can set be free from himself. While for the 4th track, “My Hands”, he’s losing strength and needs her to hold on to keep their love alive. For my personal favorites, “To Be With You”, is a winsome ballad that perfectly fits for his angelic voice and “Angels”, the Robbie Williams cover he saved from obscurity on “Idol”, is a superb revival that is melodious and pleasant on the ear.
Over all the persona of the album remains intact and ready for more. I recommend this to everyone, young and old, as long as you love music and you want something that is meaningful and inspiring. And pleasant to the ears as well, then this is the perfect CD for you. I give this outstanding debut album of Mr. Archuleta a two thumbs up!
