Cobra Starship - Hot Mess
I'll be honest with you and say I was very skeptical of this album. The first song to circulate from the album "Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We're Famous" is a very good song. But as more songs from the album were leaked and the cover art appeared, I was more than disappointed in one of my favorite bands.
Since its release on August 11, I've listened to the album at least a dozen times. The reviews for this album are mixed. Allmusic gave the album a 4/5, yet AbsolutePunk.net gave them a 39%.
There are many catchy songs on the album, especially the title track, yet there are many fillers. It's obvious that lead singer Gabe Saporta's voice isn't as strong as it used to be since his surgery to remove a cyst on his vocal chords. In some songs it doesn't seem like it's even Gabe who is singing, and other times he's covered up with rap or less-than-pleasant girls' voices.
The album has grown on me, but I still believe it's not the best Cobra Starship could have done. It's more pop than I would have liked to see from them and the lyrics are repetitive.
Songs like 'Hot Mess,' 'Pete Wentz..,' and 'Fold Your Hands Child' are wonderful songs. 'Good Girls Go Bad' is very catchy but I don't prefer Leighton Meester's voice. The song could really do without her.
Don't get me wrong, I still love the band, but I feel that this isn't the best they could have put out for their third album.
Overall, I'd give the album a 3.5/5
