Primary Colours - The Horrors

Primary Colours - The Horrors Music is made to make us feel. Music is made to make passion bubble up inside us. If a band or an artist isn’t making you feel a thing, then they’re not doing it right. In this case, The Horrors have hardly put a foot wrong.

Passed off two years ago as a gimmick, the black clad boys of The Horrors came back from a prolonged silence with a phenomenal sophomore album in May this year, putting many critics minds at ease over whether they are a serious band or not: their new album, compared to the works of Joy Division and The Smiths, was received well by both critics and fans alike.

From the opening track, Mirrors Image to the epic eight-minute finale, Sea Within a Sea, the band sound more like seasoned performers who’ve been spewing out number ones for a decade, rather than a group who’ve only released one other record and have been together only four short years.

The band has made a remarkable transition from their Strange House era, laced with catchy organ melodies and distorted guitar, into Primary Colours, a self-proclaimed ‘happy’ record, where their sounds and lyrics have matured into much more than just ‘psychotic sounds for freaks and weirdos’.

4.5/5. The only shortcoming of the superb record is the occasional awkward use of Badwan’s fantastic lyrics. This is going to be a hard album to top and The Horrors are hopefully up for the challenge.
