Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season Cut Up

Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season Cut Up Sheffield rockers Bring me the Horizon have recently released their fifth Cd, entitled Suicide Season Cut Up. The album was released November 2nd this year.

The boys decided to re-release their second album Suicide Season but with an electronic twist after Oliver Sykes, their lead man, asked a friend to remix one of their songs and was extremely pleased with how it turned out.

After some group discussion, it was decided to do this to the whole of Suicide Season and release it a few months before going into the studio again. They used basically the same process as Sykes did originally, sending e-mails out to friends and artists they knew and requesting they remix their songs. This left them with a bare minimum of work when they received the agreements, mainly listening to the songs in their remixed state before deciding on the track listing and artwork for the album.

Many times, the members have said that they wanted to do something different from their usual thrashing sound. They did do this, using some synthesizers in Suicide Season, but with Cut Up the whole of the album used synths and various computer sounds for every song. The computer sounds are highly evident in the song Sleep With One Eye Open, mixed by Tek-One.

The CD is mainly a techno mash up of the songs from Suicide Season, some mixed twice, by artists such as Sonny Moore, Travis McCoy, The Secret Handshake and Tek-One.

However, many fans have all ready passed judgment on the album, giving it big thumbs down. This is what Bring Me The Horizon wanted, however, and had said from the start of producing Cut Up, as stated in an interview by Rock Sound with Sykes, "There’s not a song on there that really sounds like the original. What’s great though is the diversity of each song. There’s dub-step to hip-hop, electro to drum and bass”, making it crystal clear that it wouldn't be what fans were used to hearing from the boys.

The album in its entirety has made it clear that their want for something different was accomplished, with songs such as Football Season is Over sounding as though it's fresh out of a night club on a Friday night, with its repetitive beat and easy-to-dance-to rhythm, whereas Sleep with One Eye Open sounds like a serious techno mix done by a computer whiz, with voicing by the computer speech program and the vocals having been changed to a quiet echo. This also helps re-affirm Sykes quote.

It Was Written in Blood, remixed by L'Amour La morgue is an odd one off the album, using themes from a television show (a hospital drama called Casualty), as well as a voice over at the beginning and end of the song. It's got an interesting vibe to it and is easy to bop your head to it, but it's a song that you'll either love or hate.

The remix for Diamonds Aren't Forever (composed by I Haunt Wizards) has a little bit of everything and changes the song from the screaming anthem to a completely different genre, some fans describing it as 'crunkcore'. Surprisingly enough, many fans have taken quite well to this song, however this could be as the majority of the vocals are still in there and they can still sing along. The remix itself is a seemingly creative one, swapping drum pads with drum beats and imitation synths with guitars. The vocals have been slightly warped in some parts, contributing to how the song sounds and how one reacts to it.

Sonny Moore's remix of The Sadness Will Never End doesn't tamper with how fragile the sound itself is, and leaves the lyrics that most fans love within it. The song has a similar feel to the original, but it's obvious it's different from the first as there is more importance for instruments, the vocals acting as a sort of filler to help back up the song.

Overall, you shouldn't listen to the album if you're expecting to hear the same screeching and fast-paced guitars and blaring drums. Suicide Season Cut Up has shown us a different side of the band as well as shown what other areas they're intrigued by, not necessarily by creating it themselves but by recruiting the help from friends to give a brief outline of something that one may not have known about the band previously. It's something completely new for the band's genre and will hopefully pave the way for future artists considering to re-release their albums.

My rating is a 3/5.
