Audio Annihilation

In 2008, after The Format’s final break up, Nate Ruess decided Arizona wasn’t for him and moved to New York. He asked Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff if they would join him in his new project, Fun.. Both agreed and a year and a half later, the band released their first album Aim and Ignite. Later in 2011, We Are Young was released, but it wasn’t until February of 2012 that it reached number one on iTunes. It is holding the number one spot still, along with their newest album, entitled Some Nights, reaching number one shortly after its release on February 21, 2012 and staying in the top 20 through March and into April.

Some Nights includes eleven tracks with a bonus and an intro track to start and end the record. Fun.’s musical style is a little different than The Format’s, even with Nate Ruess being the lead singer and Andrew Dost being a touring musician. Ruess’s unique voice is still distinguishable, but the sound and meaning Fun. is trying to portrait is quite different from The Format, although it still has some of The Format’s sound in it.

Fun. has a few different styles going on in this album, but it stays true to all of them. The very first track on the album, Some Nights Intro, is very mysterious and brings parts in from all of the songs on the record in two minutes seventeen seconds. Ruess expresses anger in parts of it and does swear once in it. Some Nights Intro has a different sound, along with the rest of the album. No two songs are alike and some really make you think but are catchy enough that you want more of it. When you need something to describe how you feel, Some Nights has many feelings in it and has many different styles that are catchy and intriguing.

If you didn’t initially love The Format, you may still love Fun. because of the differences between the two bands. They have similarities but Fun. is a up and coming band trying to make it in this industry.
