Dream Girl

SHINee's third album, Dream Girl, has been divided into two chapters: The Misconceptions of You, released this February and The Misconceptions of Me, released on the 29th of April. Let's take a look at both chapters and compare them!

SHINee has established themselves as one of the most popular Korean boy bands at the moment and they have made a name for themselves thanks to their astounding coreographies, exuberant outfits and vocal skills. Their music is known for being upbeat, fun and invites the listener to the dance floor. Their third studio album is no exception to this. However, chapters one and two are very different from one another, while maintaining the usual danciness that these five Korean boys have the fans so well used to.

The Misconceptions of You

The album opens up with "Spoile"r, which is a medley of all the eighteen songs in both albums, nine in each. The second track, "Dream Girl", was the chosen song to be released as a single in February and it sums up the spirit of Dream Girl Chapter One: The Misconceptions of You: fun, catchy and dance-y. Songs like "Hitchijiking", "Punch Drunk Love" and "Runaway" are also great examples of music you will want to dance to.

There is also room for softer, yet still catchy pop songs in this album, like "Beautiful" with its sort of romantic atmosphere and "Aside" with its 90's feel.

The only song in this first chapter that doesn't quite fit this lovely pop atmosphere is the powerful "Dynamite", where we catch a glimpse of what the second chapter is going to sound like: heavier and darker.

The Misconceptions of Me

Chapter Two: The Misconceptions of Me was released a couple of days ago, as well as the single, "Why So Serious?" But do not let the first single fool you, this album is not the colorful SHINee we're all used to! Track number one, "Nightmare", prepares the listener for a trip to an unseen side of these boys, with its sensual rhythms and lyrics about supernatural night creatures – mostly vampires.

This chapter is extremely sensual, especially the tracks "Excuse Me Miss, Orgel", "Evil" and "Dangerous (Medusa II)" that will not fail to make you dance – but a sexier kind of dance. "Like a Fire" and "SHINe (Medusa I)" are not as dark as the rest and I would risk saying they also have a 90's flavour to it, especially "Like a Fire" and its Daft Punk kind of vibe.

Chapter Two ends with a melancholic ballad, named "Sleepless Night", where the boys sing wholeheartedly about losing love. This track seems to have been made to display their vocal talent: the main vocalist Jonghyun shows just how high his voice can go; leader Onew shows off his incredible falsetto and soothing voice; Key proves he is more than the pretty boy and gifts us with a unique husky voice; Taemin shows that he has improved greatly and Minho, who used to only rap, gets singing parts as well to display his deep voice.

Overall, I personally love both chapters, but I would pick chapter two as my favorite for its sensual rhythms and for showing a new side of the boys that has been kept hidden, until now.

SHINee fighting!
