DEMI: Story of a Broken Girl

The summer’s coming and Disney’s stars are, one by one, coming out with their brand new albums, hoping that it will again (or at least – finally) hit the No. 1 in Billboard’s 100. One of the firsts to come out with the new material is Miss Demi Lovato and her brand new album DEMI. I believe that it’s not needed to introduce you this young woman, known for her roles in Disney’s Camp Rock, Princess Protection Programme or Sonny With a Chance. But this girl is not just an actress, but I would also say she’s a musician with great perspective.

DEMI is her 4th album in a row, to be released on 12th May. Singer, herself, admitted that this album is about showing her story, revealing her feelings. Paradoxically, the 90% of the material used have been written by number of lyricist, including names like Ryan Tedder from One Republic or Mitch Allan. With these names the album has big credits, but does it have a potential to become an unforgettable record? Just the time can answer this, but personally I think that her previous work would stand this question of time far better.

With the first single “Heart Attack” Demi smashed the charts around the US and Lovatics (the name of her fan base) were quite happy for their Mistress to come back with such a hit. The song itself is very powerful and very girly. Ordinary lyrics about a girl falling for a boy, but her voice is nicely building up during the refrain, showing her vocal abilities, which makes the song more rock-ish. (I must admit that her voice is very strong in this song.) The music is a bit too synthetic and the best part comes with the bridge, where even her voice is pure and flawless.

As the upcoming singel “Made in the USA” was chose. I really admire this song assuming it as the highlight of the album. It has the potential needed to become a smashing summer hit and one of the best summer songs of the year. Having this said, the structure of the song is easy but catchy. A light guitar rhythms, an easy melody and a nice summer lyrics - all that a top song needs.

Another song I found quite beautiful is “In Case”. “In Case” is a heart breaking song where we can feel Demi’s pain. Lively piece of work, that gradually gets under your skin. One of the most beautiful songs from the album. We stay in this melancholic mood, because another song worth to mention is a “Nightingale”. Slow piano melody with pretty lyrics. Demi herself is an awesome nightingale bird, which is trying to find the right way to use her vocal girt.

Moving on with songs such as “Without the Love”, “Neon Lights” of “Two Pieces”, really haven’t caught my attention. They seems to me like I have heard them somewhere before. “Really Don’t Care” featuring Cheryl Lloyd is kind of a catchy summer song, but nothing mind-blowing. And “Fire Starter” is in my opinion, very boring song which was not worth of release. (But that’s just my opinion.) And the last (for me) weak part of the album is “Never Been Hurt” reminding me of “Unbroken” from her previous album with the same title and it also reminds me of Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger”.

Apart from this entire negative I’ve written, the album is closing up with a lovely song called ‚Warrior‘. It has the lyrics, which were created with so much of a pain and a hate. But regardless of all these feelings it carries a properly selected message for (not only) young people. The strength is the way – never let anybody bring you down and when they do, just remember that you‘ll come up stronger in the end. This is what I could read from the song, but there are more things hidden in it you just need to listen carefully. This girl has a lot to tell.

To sum up, this album is a mixture of smashing hits, boring repetitive songs and delicate deep ballads. Anyone can find (at least) one song to relate to or to adore.

Suggested listening: “In Case”, “Made In the USA”, “Something That We’re Not”
