It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

In 2011, horror rockers Creature Feature released their second album, It Was a Dark and Stormy Night... It had been a while since they released an album, their debut, The Greatest Show Unearthed being released in 2007, but Curtis Rx and Erik X have release a brilliant comeback. Whilst many bands tend to tire on their second album, Creature Feature proves that they still have something to say.

Everything that made their first album great has come back in their 2011 release. Frantic riffs, demented lyrics and hooks that make the listener feel as though they have been transported into a horror freak show and this is what gives the album the distinct Creature Feature mark. Straight on from the opening song, you get thrown into a carnival world full of spooky jobs and freaky residents. We get to meet a psychotic doctor, a group of maniacal children, grave robbers and zombies, and even the Elder Gods (sadly though, Loki and Thor do not feature). Mix all of this up with an insane beat and it leaves you exhausted.

Out of the ten tracks on the album, there are definitely a few that stand out. "Grave Robber at Large" is definitely the best track on the album which is challenged by "Dr. Sawbones" and "Mommy's Little Monsters". If you want to hear the transition from their debut album to their second, "Bad Blood" had the same feeling to as "The Greatest Show Unearthed". However, one of the main reasons to like Creature Feature is the demented sense of humor that is found in their lyrics. Examples of this can be found in "One Foot in the Grave" and "The Unearthly Ones."

There are only two cons I can think of for this album. First, the frenzied pace of the songs can be a little bit overwhelming. It would be nice to hear a slower song from Creature Feature to add a little more depth to the album. Secondly, 10 tracks is simply not enough. It feels like the album was cut up somewhere. There are not any weak songs on the album but it leaves you wanting more.
