Anti-Flag - The Bright Lights of America
Anti-Flag's newest album, The Bright Lights of America is as meaningful and fabulous as ever.
The newest album sounds somewhat different from the previous two, and all the others for that matter [I just have not heard those as much], but nonetheless it has the same loud and pleasingly angry tone that we have loved since way back in '96.
I think the difference may be in the vocals of Justin Sane and Chris #2. It sounds maybe a little less scratchy or possibly a smidgen quieter. The lyrics are blunt and miffed at society, which I love to death. It is hard to find much music with any real meaning.
Well, here is the meaning.
The second song that shares the title of the album caught my attention right away.
"16 year old girl
In a hallowed carved out place
Just looking for some prettiness
But the cuts in her arm don't paint for her
A very pretty view
In her mind she dreams that she is
Far away from...
The bright lights of America
Life and death in a sold out-erica
To live and die in the heart of America
Where they sell souls"
I honestly agree. America is a screwed up place and if there's anyone to put the words and an addictive tune to it, it would be Anti-Flag. Their music is easy to relate to, especially if you feel serious changes need to be made to America. They aren't anarchist like everyone assumes. Just against the current government.
This is one of my favorite albums of theirs, alongside The Terror State.
If you have never heard Anti-Flag, I command you by the forces of my toaster. Go for it, folks. You know you want to.
