Extras is the fourth book in the 'Uglies' series. This book takes place a few years after Tally Youngblood destroyed the special ranking of uglies, pretties, and specials (a.k.a. the 'mind-rain'). Since the rules were abolished, the whole world is trying to "reboot" itself. New cliques were formed, such as "tech-heads" who specialize in developing the latest gadgets, "kickers" who spread juicy gossip and the latest trends, and "surge monkeys", people that were hooked to extreme plastic surgery.

In this new world, hovercams are everywhere, videotaping everything. Basically, the whole world has turned into a large popularity contest. Whomever gets the most recognition, or whomever was the most talked about gets more votes, which means that their "face rank" goes higher. The face rank is everything. The higher your face rank, you more things you can get.

This time, it doesn't feature on Tally specifically. The spotlight is on Aya Fuse, a Japanese fifteen year old, who's rank of 451,369 is very low. Her only change of rising up into fame is to capture a super big mega-hit story. Something totally bizarre and unexpected.

She soon meets the "Sly Girls", a rumored clique that's supposedly a myth. They pull the most dangerous and thrilling tricks, but they are highly secretive about it. Aya manages to become one of them and captures the most explosive discovery that would change the whole world as she knows it. If she airs this story on the feeds, she'd get instant fame. But the one thing that she didn't think of was... The danger.
