A Mango Shaped Space

A Mango Shaped Space A Mango-Shaped Space is a novel by Wendy Mass. This book is interesting and fun to read. It makes the reader get close to a 13 year old girl who has a condition that is out of the norm. Mia, the main character, suffers from synthesesia, a disorder in which victims may see noise or smell colors and such.

Young Mia was a regular girl as she may think. After experiencing an awful event in 3rd grade she realizes that she’s special than the others in her class. The letters of the alphabet have their own distinct color to Mia and she sees noise as colorful swirls and zigzags in the air. Mia left this a secret from everyone else including her best friend, Jenna. But one day when she’s out with her mom she meets a little boy named Billy Henkle. She immediately notices that he could see colors too and becomes well aware that she’s not the only one suffering. After she tells her parents the whole story she is brought to the doctor who explains that she is suffering from synthesesia. Being excited to hear about other synthesiac she slowly pushes everyone and everything out of her mind and focus.

Wendy Mass has written a novel that will relate to young teenagers who feel diverse to those around them. Mass’ story shows that one will be accepted no matter what their conditions are. It’s a fun and connecting story that will entertain the reader from the first page to the last.

The members of my group enjoyed this book because Mass was well descriptive in feelings and expressed the situation as clearly as possible. It was visible that Mia and Jenna trusted each other so much and that Mia really cares about her best friend. It was also entertaining because the plot line was teen friendly and the foreshadowing at the end of each chapter kept us wanting to read more.
