Using the power of Black Thirteen, Mia has transported them to New York in 1999. Susannah learns of the deal Mia made to the man in black (Walter) to give up her immortality so she can have a child. The Crimson King has promised Mia that she will have sole charge of raising the child, Mordred, for the first part of his life. All Mia has to do is take Susannah to a restaurant called The Dixie Pig in order to give birth.

Jake, Oy, and Father Callahan follow Susannah to the New York City of 1999 in order to save Susannah from the Crimson King’s henchmen. While in New York Jake and Callahan store Black Thirteen in a locker at the World Trade Center, it is implied it will be destroyed in the September 11 attacks.

Eddie and Roland end up in Maine in 1977. They have the task of securing the vacant lot from Calvin Tower. The gunslingers suspect this lot contains a secondary hub of the universe or a representation of the Dark Tower itself. Calvin Tower is in hiding in Maine from Balazar’s men who are trying to force him to sell them the lot. Upon their arrival in Maine, the gunslingers find themselves thrown into an ambush by these same men, headed by Jack Andolini. Balazar's men were tipped off on Roland and Eddie's potential whereabouts by Mia, who hoped that they would dispose of the people she perceived as threats to her child. Roland and Eddie escape the fight with the help of John Cullum, who turns out to be a very helpful ally. Roland and Eddie then decide to visit Stephen King, their creator.

The story ends with Jake and Callahan preparing to storm the Dixie Pig in order to rescue Susannah from the soldiers of the Crimson King.

The penultimate volume of the series is one of the best. And the Tower is closer than ever before...
