Why The Catcher In The Rye will never be made into a movie

Movies and films is one way us as humans fulfill our senses in our undying quest to learn and understand. Since the beginning of the motion picture, people have been fascinated by the many story lines and many faces that have appeared on the big screen. Though, some stories are better left untouched when it comes to making it open for the sense of sight. There is a reason why J.D. Salinger’s "The Catcher in the Rye" has not been made into a film and that is that, the very famous book has been passed down and interpreted in so many ways and it has caused so much conflict and discussion, making it into something that people can see, rather than look at would cause an uproar of confusion. Not to mention that regardless of how well the film is made, something will be messed up and something will be changed.

The use of the first person point of view is something that most films today barely every dare to attempt. The voice of Holden would be no different. Salinger's use of this technique makes it almost impossible to make this book into a film. Holden's voice could be viewed in many different ways and sometimes the way that he says things can also be translated differently. If they were to ever make The Catcher in the Rye into a movie, most of it would take place inside of Holden's mind, causing the movie to probably turn out very uneventful and dull.

The power of reading also has different effects over people, whether it’s the use of language in the book or the meaning behind the words. Movies on the other hand give off a very different feel. They give the view more of a third person point of view of the story and leave small room for imagination when it comes to building the characters and their looks. If Salinger's book was picked to be made into a film, finding someone to fit the shoes of Holden would almost be impossible, since, everyone has their own different view of him in their mind and no one really knows if the way that he pictures himself in his mind is reliable or not. That is another reason why books have slightly more freedom then movies. They give the reader the choice to believe what the book says about the characters look or they make up their own face in their mind. In movies, there really isn't much of a choice to pick how the person would look because they're right in front of your face on a big screen.

J.D. Salinger hopefully never intended on The Catcher in the Rye to be made into a movie. The way the book is written almost makes it impossible for directors and producers to create the voice that is Holden Caulfield. The movie would cause uproar in fans of the book and might even give off a different feeling to new readers. There is absolutely no way someone could make The Catcher in the Rye into a film and get away with it without a large struggle in front of them the whole way.
