Uglies

Uglies is the first book in the Uglies series, a novel written by Scott Westerfeld. The book is based on Tally's life. Tally is about to turn sixteen and she can't wait. Not for her license - but turning pretty. Where Tally lives, everyone at the age of sixteen turns from an horribly ugly teenager, to the stunningly beautiful pretties where your only job is to have fun and enjoy life. And nobody can stop you from that.

Tally can't wait because her best friend Peris has already turned pretty, and she misses him. She wants to have the life of the pretties. Parties, drinking and having fun all day round.

But Tally meets Shay, a rambunctious teen who doesn't want to turn pretty. She would rather risk going into the outside world, a world outside the confines of the city, then turn pretty. Shay leaves her a note in case she would ever want to find her in the near future.

Then Tally has a word with the authorities that leave her with one choice; find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty. With what Tally finds out about being pretty, ends up not being as pretty as she thought it would be. And Tally's choice on ratting out Shay or not turning pretty turns Tally's world upside down.
