Breaking Dawn

Breaking Dawn We’ve all heard of the famous Twilight series that has now become a plague. In my opinion at least. Breaking Dawn disappointed me the most and was the worst in the entire series. Breaking Dawn is the fourth, and final, installment of the Twilight series. Breaking Dawn follows the adventures of the heroine, Bella Swan, and the vampire, Edward Cullen.

The book starts out with ‘Book 1’ which is in Bella’s POV. Edward has finally proposed to Bella and has agreed to marry her. The wedding is planned by one of Edward’s sisters, Alice. Alice is the most outgoing, and nicest, of the two sisters. The other sister, Rosalie, despises Bella. To say the least. Rosalie has never liked letting a human into their vampire life. She never warmed up to the idea of it. Edward makes an agreement with Bella. After their honeymoon Edward is to turn her into an immortal. Edward of course hesitates of this decision before agreeing to let Bella fully come into his life for all eternity. Everything is going smoothly until the night of the wedding.

After Edward and Bella say their vows, the after-party is thrown where Bella’s other lover, Jacob Black, comes into play. Jacob is jealous that Bella has now married Edward and he no longer can have her. When Bella mentions the honeymoon Jacob gets furious with Edward. Meyers’ builds up the suspense and makes you think a fight is going to happen, it never does. Jacob walks away with his werewolf friends and leaves the happy couple. Edward and Bella honeymoon on an island called Esme’s Island which Edward’s ‘father’, Carlisle, buys for his wife, Esme.

Edward and Bella end up having sex one night and do it again. But all their happy thoughts come to an end when Bella starts to feel sick. Not understanding what is going on Edward calls Carlisle. When the couple comes home, they find out Bella is pregnant. Now let’s stop for a second, pregnant? That was one of the worst parts of the book. Meyers’ completely contradicted herself. From an earlier novel Meyers had said that vampires didn’t have any bodily fluids. So how could Bella get pregnant? Moving on... All of a sudden Rosalie, who has always wanted kids, takes an interest in Bella. The readers come to find out that Rosalie wants to take Bella’s kid. She’s always wanted a kid. In Breaking Dawn Rosalie’s past is revealed. Jacob finds out that Bella and Edward have come back and the first thought in Jacob’s mind is that Bella has been turned into one of the ‘bloodsuckers’. Jacob, going against his pack’s leader, goes to find Edward and Bella only to find out Bella is still mortal but pregnant.

The reader then comes to find out that Bella’s ‘child’ is destroying her from the inside. The child being half vampire and half human is eating Bella from the inside of her womb. Yet Bella does not want to abort the child and keep this thing that is killing her. She sees the pain Edward is in yet she still keeps this thing that is bent on killing her. Jacob agrees to make a pact with Edward that if Bella doesn’t survive, then Jacob has rights to kill Edward. Jacob then agrees to watch over the Cullens when the werewolf pack decides to attack them for ‘breaking the treaty’ because Bella being pregnant is making a new vampire and making Bella, who has yet to be turned, a vampire breaks the treaty. Yet the only way to save Bella is to turn her into a vampire when she is due to give birth to this mutant spawn of theirs.

The Volturi, which is an elite group of vampires in Italy, find out about Bella being pregnant with their mutant spawn. The Volturi act on this and send word that in a matter of time, the Cullens will be killed for the crime they have committed. The Cullens, in need of protection, call together friends from other vampire covets and bring them to Forks, Washington to protect the Cullens and Bella against the Volturi. So Bella’s ‘child’ is due to come into this world. In the process this ‘child’ breaks Bella’s spine and nearly kills her. In an effort to save her Edward injects some of his venom into her and bites her to turn her into a vampire… Assuming she isn’t already dead. The child is born but once the child is born, Bella’s heart stops and Edward panics.

Turns out Bella didn’t die. The child is born and Bella is now a vampire. Grand. Bella names the child Renesme in honor of her own mother, Renee, and Edward’s mother Esme. Panic sets in when the reminder of the Volturi coming to kill the Cullens and the ‘child’. The Cullens quickly gather all of the covets that are ‘friends’. Bella discovers that she is indeed a ‘gifted vampire’. She harnesses her power. So enter the Volturi. All of this suspense of three hundred or so pages will finally break loose in this big fight with the Volturi… Right? Wrong. Have some ‘convincing’ talk from the many people surrounding the Cullens the Volturi decide that the ‘child’ is not evil and leave the Cullens alone. Cue a happy ending…

The plot line in Breaking Dawn... I need to ask this, was there one? I didn’t seem to find a ‘plot’ in this book. And even if there was one, it was bad. Breaking Dawn seemed like it was very rushed and crammed together. It seemed as if Meyers had promised another book in the Twilight series and when she started it... She couldn’t finish it. All in all, Breaking Dawn seemed like a bad fanfiction. It seemed like Meyers took some of this stuff people wrote in fanfictions and copied it into her book.

The characters in Breaking Dawn were disappointing. Bella, the main character, is your typical ‘Mary-Sue’. She seems so dull throughout the entire series. She is so lifeless and seems to have no emotions. In the beginning of the series Bella things she is just so average and that she is not good enough. What message does that send to teenage girls? Not a good one. As the books go on Bella becomes more and more dependent on Edward and seems so useless without him by her side. Again, what is that telling teenage girls? Now Edward...

Where to start with him. Edward is made out to be the ‘perfect’ vampire with no flaws. Edward loves Bella and doesn’t want to hurt her. He watches her when she sleeps without her permission. Um, creepy much? He basically controls her life. A lot of girls are saying that they want their own Edward. Why? Why want someone that stalks you and controls you? Edward is not the ideal boyfriend. Alice seemed to be the liveliest character. She was spunky and fun. She had attitude. She had courage. She was a cool character. Jacob too. Jacob, in my opinion, was much better than Edward. Jacob was sweet, caring, he didn’t stalk Bella and he didn’t try to control Bella’s life. But Breaking Dawn made Jacob seem like such a jerk which I didn’t like at all.

Meyers’ style was very... Low grade I guess. For a ‘best selling’ author her writing style doesn’t seem that great to me. Meyers’ writing is very simple and fails to look even remotely ‘complex’. I understand that this book was made for ‘young adults’ but come on now, she could have seemed a little bit better in her writing. All in all, I didn’t like Meyers’ writing style.

I wouldn’t recommend this book at all. Did Breaking Dawn live up to the expectations the last three books set for it? No, it didn’t. Did I like this book at all? Not really. This book was poorly written. The characters didn’t develop at all. In honesty, they were torn down throughout the series. Meyers’ changed the characters as the books when on. Do I think Twilight should have had a sequel nonetheless three? No. To me there should have no sequels to Twilight. Each sequel was worse and worse and made me hate the series more and more. In short, Breaking Dawn was horrible and I wouldn’t recommend anyone read it.
