Old Yeller - Fred Gipson

This Newbery Honor Book is a delightful story of a young boy named Travis. There is a cattle drive that happens each year in which his father will be attending. Pa leaves Travis to tend to the family farm and help keep his mother and younger brother from danger.

But once things finally start to fall into place on the farm without Pa, a strange dog comes to the farm. It is a yellow and very ugly dog, it is quite a rascal, too. But besides the bad things that this rascal of a dog does it is also smart and could be a big help. Out on the Texas frontier this dog could help Travis with a lot of things that he must do to help keep his family safe and well.

As the dog, Old Yeller, has helped Travis's family in many ways can Travis do the same for the strong and courageous dog. Old Yeller is a rascal and tends to get into other farmers chickens and crops. When the farmers what to get rid of Old Yeller for good can Travis save him?
