Broken

Broken Ash Perrault feels broken. Ever since her mom died she’s been angry and depressed. And now her entire world has been transformed into a messed up Cinderella story. Her father’s fiancée, Ella, and her two daughters, Katie and Julia, are moving in. Mouse, her best friend, is keeping a secret from her. And Seth, the guy who she’s “dating,” doesn’t want to be seen in public with her because she doesn’t fit into the popular crowd. But on top of all that drama she has another problem: glass breaking around her whenever she gets mad.

I found this book in my school library the other day and decided to give it a look. It was very short and only took me about two hours to get through. I felt when I was finished that it could have been longer, seeing as I personally like longer novels to read, but overall it wasn’t too bad.

The writing style book is very simple, and even though some may call it mediocre, I found it quite easy to understand. It implies that this book could be read by middle school students as well as high school ones, which I found very unique.

The plot, however, was a bit thin and unoriginal. Ash is the typical outcast who gets picked on by the popular girls. If it wasn’t for her purple hair and 90’s retro clothes, she’d be just another cliché character. Also, the fact that she was dating a football player and getting harassed by the clingy-cheerleader-ex-girlfriend has been way overdone already, so that aspect I found a tad repetitive. There were a few parts, though, that completely had me impressed by its originality.

Overall, this book was very good and well written. There were a few plot threads the author left undone, which annoyed me. But still, it was a very enjoyable read and I recommend it if you have nothing else to read.
