The Lost Boys - The Tribe

The Lost Boys - The Tribe To be honest when I first heard that they were making a sequel to The Lost Boys twenty-one years after the 1987 original I was worried. The Lost Boys has always been (and will probably remain) my favourite film of all time. I never thought a follow on would work such a long time after the original but having just watched it I can say one thing, it works.

In a way that is.

The casting of Angus Sutherland as the head vampire Shane was nothing short of inspired. The way his features, tone, movement, and persona mirror that of his brother for me pulled the two films together. The role of Edgar Frog played by Corey Feldman also brought the recurring theme but that character lacked something.

Frog says he knows what it is like to lose a sibling to the un-dead but this is never elaborated on. In the original film it was the Frog brothers who used comic books to learn their vampire hunting skills and I for one would have wanted to know what happened there. Maybe this is just me but that was a let down.

Also for me another let down was the amount of mirrored scenes from the original film. I mean a beach party round a fire? Come on use some originality guys… also the bike thing was done before. Not only scenes but also lines like… ‘No two bloodsuckers go the same way’ again said by Edgar Frog.

However there was more gore, more killing, move violence, and better methods of vampire death. The turning to stone and exploding at the start was just an amazing piece of filming.

The story which turned out as a modern remake was well done in many ways although it was a shame there was no head vampire plot twist in the new version. I would have liked it to be the aunt but she just turned out to be a pointlessly annoying character. Shame really.

Evan also seemed to have no real point and again his character wasn’t expanded. If it had been then maybe it would have made sense that he was chosen for Nicole’s first kill.

However, all that said I was pleasantly surprised by it. It didn’t stink and was good viewing. Rated eighteen for swearing, gore, nudity and sex but even when all of those things were for show at times the rating is necessary.

I was also surprised by Aiden’s cover of the classic ‘Cry Little Sister’ which is a song I love from a film but it’s well done and fits well in the film.

In summary, more of a remake than a sequel and even though it doesn’t mach The Lost Boys it still gets my thumbs up. It is definitely worth a look.
