Dead Island

Dead Island is an open world, action role-playing game that was released in North America on September 6, 2011 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The critically accalimed game, developed by Techland and published by Deep Silver, is centered on surviving a zombie outbreak at a tropical resort.

The game takes place on the fictional island of Banoi, which is home to a tropical resort hotel. You play as one of the four main characters- Sam B., a rapper; Xian Mei, a hotel desk clerk; Logan, a former football star; and Purna, a former police officer. They have nothing in common (at first), and have never met until the morning after a high-profile party.

The four reluctant heroes are quick to discover they're immune to the virus, which has turned much of the island's occupants into flesh eating, zombie-like creatures. From there on out, it's an intense battle to stay alive, while taking on quests for the other, non-immune survivors. Starting at the resort, you're given several objectives to complete, before you're able to move on to bigger parts of the island. Overall, there are four main maps: the resort, the nearby town of Moresby, the jungle, and finally, the prison; each divided into Acts (like a movie or play), and all more dangerous than the one before it.

I say this because each map you encounter holds special zombie characters; bigger than the regular zombies, and much harder to kill. There's a "Thug", a "Suicider", a "Ram", a "Floater", and a "Butcher". In my opinion, I find the Butcher to be the worst, simply because he's just really, really creepy, but it's different for everyone.

I highly recommend this game if you are into open world games, zombie games, first person shooting games, melee weapons, and pretty much any other form of weapon you can think of. Dead Island has it all. Of course, there are a few negatives I should warn you of.

Since the game is available for the Xbox 360 and PS3, that means you're able to play online with people all over the world; but, it is not a two player. I found this to be particularly annoying when I wanted to play with my brother and a few friends who were over. That can be easily overlooked, though. Another thing that bothers me sometimes is the glitches. I don't know if it's just my console (I'm kind of thinking no), but it does glitch a lot throughout. This becomes a problem when you're facing down one of the infected and all of a sudden you have a glitch, and then you're getting attacked. I can say Dead Island makes up for their downfalls, though. You have unlimited lives, meaning you can get killed repeatedly, with no other repercussions besides the loss of money.

Scattered all around the resort (including on dead bodies) are endless amounts of money. This can range from $20, to thousands of dollars. Basically, the bigger the kill, the more money you get. With this money, you can buy amazing weaponry, health packs, modifications, among other things that'll ultimately help you down the line.

Overall, I think this game is one of the best I've ever played. Everyone's opinion is different, of course, and some have panned it. But I, myself, can't get enough of it. I hope this article is helpful and enlightening. If there's any other questions or concerns, feel free to message me; or if you'd like to play together, don't hesitate to shoot me a message, either. For those who get the game, enjoy!
