Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! On entering the dimly lit room I was shocked to see that the Tuesday night, 8:00 showing was packed with women of all ages, and the occasional father or husband dragged along to watch the chick flick. As the opening scene came into view I was delighted with the quaint setting of a Greek island, in which I’m sure anyone would want to holiday, though I’m convinced the B&B which Donna owns is not the most comfortable place to stay, as shown in the movie.

The basic plot of the well known show is that Donna (Meryl Streep) is the mother of soon to we wed Sophie, (Amanda Seyfried) and the day before her daughters wedding, unbeknown to Donna, her three old boyfriends turn up, each of whom could be Sophie’s father. The film takes the audience through the fun and disheartening effort to find who the dad is.

The film which includes both heartbreaking and hilarious moments is filled with singing, dancing and of course uplifting jokes. Within the first half hour I found myself wanting to break free from my seat and dance in the isles, singing along to Meryl Streep belting out the hit “Mamma Mia!” atop the roof of a barn.

Julie Walters, Christine Baranski give the film a humorous lift as they star as the best friends of Donna. Throughout they are shown as an odd match of friends, but nevertheless close.

The ridiculous disco outfits pulled out of the closet by the three older women in the play can’t fail to make you cringe and smile at the same time, making you at some points loose track of the story line and focus only on trying to work out how they are standing in silver platform boots.

This film is a must see, bearing in mind you watch it with friends and have no objection to Abba songs and corny story lines. An enjoyable, uplifting, champagne bubbling, disco dancing remake; Mamma Mia!, Here we go again.
