Bruno Ist No-No

Bruno Ist No-No Bruno, the brain child of Sacha Baron Cohen and director Larry Charles, is set up like their previous movie Borat (2006). You meet the character ("Hi! I'm Bruno!" ) and you learn about his life... kind of (you don't get the true background story like you do in Borat.) Bruno is in the fashion business in Europe, hailing from Austria. He's thin, he's stylish, and he longs to be famous. But when a mishap at a fashion show gets Bruno black listed, he's kicked out the back door and forgotten.

From there the story really begins with Bruno going off to America to be a super famous A-list movie star. However before he goes anywhere, his assistant leaves him, his boyfriend breaks up with him, and all he has left is his assistant's assistant, Lutz (Gustaf Hammarsten). In America, he hires an agent who helps Bruno to make a television show interviewing famous people. When that goes awry, Bruno tries other attempts such as adopting a black baby - which he traded for an iPod, trying to get kidnapped and held hostage by the Al Qaeda, all ending terribly.

Later in the story, he makes the connection that in order to be famous, he has to leave his gay ways and become straight. Going down to Alabama, he sees a "gay converter" to help him change his ways. He takes up several activities to help him become straight, such as hunting and attending a swinger party where he is at the mercy of a well breasted dominatrix.

Then of course, in the traditional sappy Hollywood ending, Bruno finally becomes world famous and lives happily ever after with his adoptive African son OJ and Lutz - his assistant's assistant.

I am sad to say that Bruno was over hyped. The trailer leaves you thinking this is a hilarious movie that you should see as soon as it comes out, but the movie leaves you feeling violated and scared. The first ten minutes reveal gay porn, and jokes about the modeling industry, then followed by not so funny gay jokes. The movie will make you laugh every now and then with lines like "Your King Osama, looks like a dirty wizard or a homeless Santa." but mainly you were just laughing at the rare funny moments that occurred every three bad punch lines, and the horrendous racial jokes.

The movie gets a one out of four from me. I'm not easily offended but I left extremely offended and feeling terribly violated (also having a friend leave crying.) It was a complete waste of my time, and friend's money, but by all means, go and watch in terror of the horrible gay-Austrian man who compares himself to Hitler. It's not my eight dollars.
