The Ugly Truth

The Ugly Truth The Ugly Truth, starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, is an R rated chick flick. It tells the story of a single woman (Heigl) who keeps herself completely occupied and focused on her job at a news station, since she doesn't have a social life, and a man (Butler) trying to make it through life by having a TV show about what guys really want in a relationship. Sex.

The two of them get unexpectedly thrown together when Butler takes a job at the news station Heigl works at. Naturally, Abby (Heigl's character), who is an accomplished, independent woman, takes an instant dislike to womanizer Mike (Butler). It doesn't help that Mike makes fun of everything on his show that Abby has tried when it comes to relationships.

When Abby gets a cute new neighbor, a doctor at that, and has an unexpected run in with him, literally, she practically glows with the thought of snagging him for her own. Mike finds out about Abby's new love interest and tells her it will never work unless she does exactly what he tells her to. Taking a chance, after making a bet that would get Mike out of the station permanently if it didn't work, Abby agrees.

After taking Abby shopping, and to get hair extensions, among other things, he teaches her to flirt and act how he thinks men like woman to act. The two schemers end up, unknowingly, falling for each other, but problems arise, both personally and at the station (I won't give it all away), making Butler run from his feelings, and Heigl.

Trying to carry on with her life, still single Heigl, frantically tries to fix unexpected problems at the station, while Butler is not around. When they run into each other at a hot air balloon festival, they get stuck on a balloon ride where they argue and yell at each other on live television, although they don't know it. Of course, they end up making up, and making out, it is a chick flick.

Overall, it is an adorable film. It is rated R, and for good reason. They curse frequently, and there are sexual references and jokes as well. The jokes are funny, the actors are good at their job, the plot, while it is rather "I knew that was going to happen", it really is great. Anyone who has the chance to see it should (as long as innocent ears aren't around).
