Dogma

Dogma Dogma is probably one of the only comedies that I've seen that are able to make me laugh my head while still having more depth than your average rom-com. But you should be warned that to watch this film you will need an open mind and a warped sense of humour.

This film is certainly one of Kevin Smith's series, which includes Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks - all of which I would recommend.
The killer cast includes Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Alan Rickman and Salma Hayek.

It tells the story of two banished angels, Bartleby and Loki, who was formerly the Angel of Death. The pair of them had been banished to earth after they gave God the finger.
Bartleby discovers that the new Catholic Church has said that after walking through the archway of a specific Church you can be cleared of all sin. The two angels hear this and immediately set out to find the Church so that they can be purged of all sin and go back home to heaven.

However, God does not want this and if the two angels walk through the archway the world will and and dogma will be erased. So he sends the Metatron Alan Rickman to find a woman named Bethany Sloane, who unknown to her is the last descendant of Jesus Christ. Bethany reluctantly accepts the quest and is accompanied by the thirteenth disciple, Rufus, who insists the reason he has not been included in the bible is because he's black, a muse-turned-stripper and two 'Prophets' who are in fact a pair of stoners called Jay and Silent Bob. Jay and Silent Bob feature in all of Kevin Smiths movies and denfinetly make this film what it is; hilarious.

What makes this movie really great is not just the crazy, sick humour or all the one liners (Bethany: you knew Jesus? Rufus: Knew him? N**** owes me twelve bucks!) but the idea of faith and how fair God really is. If angels exist isn't God like a dictatorship over them?
And in the case of Rufus being black, is the Bible worth trusting?
The movie poses some thought provoking questions about faith and religion. If you're not caught up in the humour or the thrilling point try and think about them.

I would recommend this movie to anyone 15+ (I'm not sure of the actual rating, but this movie does include references to sex and drugs, and has it's fair share of swearing and some violence) who enjoys a laugh and is willing to take a joke about Christianity. The characters are so easy to fall in love with and you feel sympathy for everyone.

Dogma Quotes

Metatron: I am to charge you with a holy crusade.
Bethany: For the record, I work in an abortion clinic.
Metatron: Noah was a drunk. Look what he accomplished. And no one's even asking you to build an ark.

Bethany: Then - I don't mean to sound ungrateful - but what are you doing hanging around?
Jay: We're here to pick up chicks.
Bethany: Excuse me?
Jay: We figure an abortion clinic is a good place to meet loose women. Why else would they be there unless they like to f**k?

Rufus: And that, my friends, is called hypocrisy. A black man can steal your stereo, but he can't be your Savior.

Rufus: You know what the dead do with most of their time? They watch the living. Especially in the shower.
