This is, hands down, my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. I saw the midnight premiere, then went back a few days later and saw it again, then a few days later to watch it for a third time, and I could still see it an infinite of times and never get tired of it! (I'd also probably cry every single one of those times.)
I've always been a major Batman fan, though I've only read some of the comics. When I was little, my parents introduced me to the early Batman films, the ones with Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer and--sadly--George Clooney. I was hooked on the spot. I latched on to every Batman thing I could find--especially the cartoons, from the 90s series to "Justice League" to "Batman Beyond."
And while I've now gone back and realized that "Batman & Robin" is one of the campiest, most idiotic films EVER and that "Batman Forever" isn't that great either, even WITH the gorgeous Val Kilmer, I've never lost my love of Batman. Keaton's portrayal of the masked vigilante was utterly amazing, he was perfect for the part--though he's not the best-looking guy and I always thought Bruce was supposed to be GORGEOUS. And even though I thought Jack Nicholson went a little over-the-top with the Joker--something I didn't think was possible, but if anyone can do it, it's Nicholson--that first Keaton Batman movie is one of my favorites.
Then Christopher Nolan's trilogy comes along and I have all-new Batman movies to spazz out over! I saw "Batman Begins" in theaters and almost DIED, I was so psyched! And it's darker and more twisted and shows the terrible struggle that Bruce has with trying to stay the hero and not give in to the revenge that's threatening to consume his life and Christian Bale played the tortured billionare so well and the emotions were so REAL and I just couldn't imagine how the sequel could be any better. Then "The Dark Knight" comes out and it has the Joker--who was ALWAYS my favorite character--and he's played by a favorite actor of mine, the magnificent Heath Ledger, and I knew that Heath wouldn't disappoint me like Jack did and I was RIGHT. Then Nolan went and threw in Harvey Dent and I was freaking out the entire movie, just waiting for him to get in his accident, and when it finally happened, I was DEVASTATED and again the emotions were so REAL. After Heath's death, I knew that the final installment wouldn't be starring the Joker and I was okay with that because I knew Nolan changed villains to honor his memory. But then that left the question of the villain for the third and last part of the trilogy.
I never expected Tom Hardy to be Bane--right before the first trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises," I'd seen him co-starring in the rom-com "This Means War" with Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon, so all I could think was, "Adorable British guy is playing BANE??? Terrifyingly evil BANE???" But I was NOT disappointed! He did an AMAZING job. And Anne Hathaway totally floored me with her excellent portrayal of Selina Kyle, another of my favorite characters. Even though I knew she was a great actress, I was kind of skeptical, but she pulled through and has to be my favorite portrayal of Catwoman--well, no, Michelle Pfieffer still has her beat on that. I do agree that John Blake's full name being "Robin" was quite cheesy, and that had to be the only part I was unhappy with of the entire movie. My Batman-fanatic mind was going into overdrive and silently yelling, "YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DICK GRAYSON, YOU LOSER!!! YOU DON'T DESERVE TO UPHOLD BATMAN'S LEGACY!!!" But hey, what can you do?
This is the best I've ever seen Christian Bale act, and it had to be challenging to play so many facets of the same character. You have mourning/recluse Bruce, reinvigorated Bruce, broken Bruce, billionare businessman Bruce, AND Batman, and Christian Bale played them all PERFECTLY.
Christopher Nolan made me roll with laughter at the banter and most interactions between Bruce and Selina (my favorite line: "So that's what that feels like..." after Selina disappears from the roof top), grit my teeth in rage against Bane's cruelty, cheer with triumph whenever the Dark Knight succeeded, and cry like a baby at parts even SLIGHTLY depressing. That right there, that huge range of emotions--that PROVES how amazing this movie is.
As I said at the beginning of my very unnecessarily extensive comment, this is now officially my favorite movie EVER, and I'm just looking for an excuse to watch it again!

Great review! Loved the small point about Alfred because for me he was one of the best. Great job!

I just came back from watching the movie and I must say, it was beyond spectacular. From watching the trailer, I knew right then and there that his movie would be the best of the whole trilogy and an amazing ending. The betrayal, the heartbreak, the weakness, everything that was portrayed in this movie was real to me.

It was a story line that I could not take my eyes away from and I understand every bit of it. Christian Bale is the best Batman—in my opinion—for his amazing acting. I have seen nearly all of his movies and he is a great actor indeed, but through all the other Batman actors, he is one of the best. He certainly does fit the Batman role.

The final movie to the end of the trilogy was fantastic. I literally left the cinema stunned. I was pretty much overjoyed with the conclusion. The cast in this film was unbelievable. All rewards go to Christopher Nolan for making such a perfect trilogy. Christian Bale will always be my favorite Batman. No other person can play him like he can and that's why I fell in love with these films so much. The story lines are such a treat to watch.

I totally agree with what you've said. I said to my sister the first time we watched it (I went to see it twice in two days) that I thought Tom Hardy sounded like Sean Connery and I'm glad someone else picked up on it because the first time I heard him talk, I did have to choke back a little laugh.

I went to the midnight showing. It was actually a marathon. We watched all three in a row (6:00Pm-3:30PM). It was entertaining and on the verge of punishment I must admit. But it was great conclusion to the trilogy and it all fit together nicely. I loved the twists and the ending was nice.

The Robin comment in the movie was a bit cheesy but it's Nolanverse and he can do what he wants in his universe. I liked how he is to become the new Batman because in the eyes of the citizens Batman is forever because he is a symbol.

I liked Christian Bale as Batman but watching all three I noticed something terrible. He began to have a horrible lisp at the last half of "The Dark Knight." It almost ruined the night for me because I kept giggling. Almost.

I enjoyed Anne Hathaway as catwoman. I was a bit skeptical, at first, but I began to warm up to the personality she brought to the character (No, I'm not a Berry fan.)

I had a struggle with Bane. He was ripped, dangerous, and ruthless. I liked how they didn't go over-the-top with the tubes and green like in past movies or comics. It seems much more practical in live action movies but I hated how he sounded a bit like Sean Connery. Besides that he was great but I do have a knit-pick and say that Bane was suppose to be from South America because that was where the prision was so my comic nerd wanted to complain about that but I do realize that it was Nolanverse and he can do whatever the hell he wants in his own universe. The movie depicted the prision to be somewhere that was in the general area of perhaps North Africa, Middles, East and even possibly parts of Asia and that makes plenty of sense considering Ra's al Ghul but yeah that was my one nerdy complaint.

All in all I was entertained and it was something that my boyfriend and I could both agree to watch.

This was a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful trilogy. The ending was completely unexpected, but wholly enjoyable. Yes, it was long, but it didn't feel stretched out or anything. I really only noticed how long it was because the guy I saw it with slept through half the film. (We went to a midnight showing.) Great review.

This movie was epic and mind blowing, the ending alone was like unexpected. Christopher Nolan did great with all three movies, just love how the last one ties all them up. Christian Bale is the top of my favorite batmans, next to Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer. I agree with Icamane the Mistress, it didn't feel like a three hour movie which is surprising. I believe no one can out do, Christopher Nolan's batman masterpieces. Mr. Green Mr. Green

I did hear they might be rebooting it but I really think they should leave it as it is. I really love Christian Bale as Batman though - he's the best yet.

I don't know if this is true or not, but... I did read somewhere that Christian Bale may have decided to do more than just the original 3. The only reason there were 3 is because he had only signed on for 3 movies. Although, I did not read your review I can tell from the other person's comment that you liked it. It was a really good movie. Anne Hathaway was a much better Catwoman than Hallie Berry ever was. Christian Bale was a great Batman, as expected. As for Bane, that was awesome. Can't forget Liam Niason, that man's a beast. Sadly, I was half tired through the whole movie. So, I'll probably have to go see it again. I know I missed a lot.

I could not agree more. It was so perfectly executed, and it completes what I feel is the best film trilogy I've ever seen that hasn't been adapted from a book. Even though it's long, it honestly doesn't even feel like you've been there for almost three hours xD
