Big Miracle

Big Miracle is based on the true story of an event that happened in a small town in Alaska. It tells the story of three whales named Fred, Wilma and Bam-Bam, who are trapped in an ice block, and the people desperately trying to save them.

The film, a light-hearted family movie, contained romance, humor, and drama. The bits of humor mixed together with the dramatic plot made for an all-around excellent movie, and the casting was superb.

Drew Barrymore plays Rachel, a stubborn nature activist, who will do anything in her power to save the whales. Barrymore did an excellent job embracing this character. Her messy hair and botched dye job add to Rachel’s essence.

John Krasinski, known for his role in The Office, plays Adam Carlson, a small time news anchor looking to make it big. Krasinski’s goofy but loveable looks and amazing acting ability gave Adam new life. His personality and happy-go-lucky attitude made his character one of my favorites.

My favorite role belonged to Ahmaogak Sweeney, who played Nathan, a young member of Alaska’s Inupiat tribe. Sweeney’s character begins to grow out of touch with his native people, listening to music instead of helping with the hunt. As the story progresses, Nathan grows and learns the importance of sticking to your roots. To me, his final line sums up the movie perfectly: “Sometimes, I think about that whole in the ice, where we first found them, and how it kept getting bigger and bigger until it let the whole world in.”
