The Five-Year Engagement

The Five-Year Engagement is a romantic comedy that shows that darker side of the road to marriage. The film stars Jason Segal and Emily Blunt as a young couple taking their relationship to the next step. Throughout their long engagement, they deal with many problems including a move to northern Michigan and career switches. The two must learn to take the good with the bad and accept the changes in their partner.

Jason Segal plays Tom Solomon, an aspiring chef and avid lover of food. Tom’s love for his fiancĂ© causes him to put a few of his dreams on the back burner, so she can pursue her own. Segal does the character well, as it is very similar to his long running character Marshall in How I Met Your Mother. Segal’s burly build fit the character perfectly and his loveable face made the character more relatable. Overall, Segal’s performance was phenomenal.

Violet Barnes, Solomon’s fiancĂ©, was played by Emily Blunt. Blunt played the character well, and her chemisty with Segal lit up on the screen. Her character, a university psychologist, was a perfect match for Segal’s, and the two played well off one another. Needless to say, this is a duo I would like to see perform together more.

Overall, the light-hearted romantic comedy exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes a bit of comedy and romance mixed together, and all fans of How I Met Your Mother.
