The Big Year

The Big Year is a new comedy starring Jack Black, Steve Martin, and Owen Wilson. The film follows Black’s character, Brad Harris, as he attempts to set the world record of the highest number of different species of birds seen in a year. Along the way, he befriends Stu Preissler, played by Steve Martin, and encounters his arch rival, Kenny Bostick, played by Owen Wilson.

Jack Black did an amazing job as the recently divorced, socially awkward bird watcher. His character was calmer than his usual outgoing, wild characters, and he played the part well. Though The Big Year was still a comedy, it was very different from Black’s usual movie roles, and it was nice to see him step out of his comfort zone a little bit.

Steve Martin was superb in his role as the successful businessman turned bird watcher. His character was very relatable and showed the audience that it’s never too late to follow your dreams, and retirement can be the best time of your life.

Owen Wilson’s role as the rival bird watcher brought some conflict to the film. This character was very different from Wilson’s usual roles, and his role as the movie’s villain was excellent. His character proved to the audience, as well as the bird watchers, that being the best comes at a cost.

The Big Year was an excellent comedy that told a great story and had a great message. It was one of the most unique movies I have seen this year and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys movies like Due Date and Drillbit Taylor.
