A Movie a Day: Space Jam

Hello and welcome to A Movie a Day, a written review series where I, AlmightyElemental, will be watching and writing about a random movie every day. The movies will be anything from recent hit blockbusters to random obscurity and everything in between. I think this is going to be a fun little exercise in my sanity and your patience, so let's fall down the rabbit hole together, shall we?

Every so often, you stumble across a movie that could only have been created through a few very specific yet completely random elements coming together in the same place at the same time. Usually, it seems like these movies were made by throwing darts, putting the words hit in a blender, rearranging the still-legible letters and trying to make a plot out of the few words they can make. This is definitely one of those movies.

So what do you get when you combine Michael Jordan, the Looney Tunes, Aliens, an Intergalactic Theme Park and Dennis from Jurassic Park? Why, Space Jam of course!

Plot

An alien named Swackhammer (Danny Devito) runs an intergalactic theme park called Moron Mountain. Swackhammer overhears one kid complaining to his dad about how the park sucks so therefore, Swackhammer obviously concludes that the park is failing and needs an awesome new attraction. After sitting on the remote, he turns on his collection of over 50 TV's, each one somehow showing a different Looney Tunes Cartoon, and again makes of the logical decision of sending his minions down to earth to kidnap the fictional cartoon characters.

Luckily for him though, they do exist in this universe. All you have to do is slam a spaceship through a supermarker and all of a sudden, you're in the aptly named Looney Tuneland. The minions kidnap the Looney Tunes, Bugs Bunny talks his way out of it by the way of a Basketball game (just go with it), the aliens retaliate by stealing the talent of big name NBA Players (just go with it) so the Looney Tunes decide the only way they can win is by kidnapping Michael Jordan to help them (just go with it). Hilarity thus insues.

Thoughts

I grew up with this movie. Space Jam is a HUGE part of my childhood (I'm doing well with reviewing movies I haven't seen, eh?) and I can't watch this movie without getting a huge goofy grin on my face. That being said, however, this movie is far from perfect. I mean, just look at the plot alone: Does that sounds like an idea that was conceived by anyone resembling a normal train of thought?

I guess, though, that's why it works for me. It's the Looney Tunes! They aren't known for being normal and sane. The Looney Tunes are silly and goofy and random so imagine all the hilarity that can be had when they're in among an actual straight human character and (sort of) menacing villains for a change! There's one or two elements here and there that I don't agree with (I'm looking at you, Tweety's new voice) but other than that, I do, and always will, love this movie.

I give it a solid B+.
