The Great Gatsby - Comments

  • I adored this movie, but two things did bother me. The first thing was the theme song (I think it's the theme song). As much as I love "Young and Beautiful", they played it a tad too much in the movie. There was one scene when they finally played 1920s jazz and I said to myself, "Finally!" but then it slowly turned into "Young and Beautiful" and I said, "UGH WHY?!" Also, Nick and Jordan were my favorite characters while reading this book. For some reason I was intrigued by the "thing" they had going on. The fact that that didn't happen in the movie disappointed me.

Other than those two things, I thought this movie was great. I swear, if I could go to a party like Gatsby's my life would be complete O_O

  • I went to the movie knowing it wasn't going to be like the book. That's why it didn't disappoint me. It's a good entertaining Hollywood movie. Good costumes and make- up. The acting was good, also. The music didn't really fit the movie. At one point it really annoyed me. I don't regret going to see it either. I really like your review. It's honest. Smile

You should probably read the book. It is one of the most well-known examples of American literature, and the film is basically nothing like the novel.

There are definitely A LOT of deviations from the novel in the film, and I actually thought of more after writing this review. If you want to watch a film version that is a better representation of the novel, I'd recommend the Toby Stephens/Paul Rudd one because it really sticks to the events and relationships in the novel and Toby Stephens portrayal of Gatsby is the most similar to the way the character is portrayed in the book. I went with my best friend to see the new movie (we'd both read the novel like 6 years ago in high school and watched the A&E movie in class), and we both agreed that we liked the A&E film version better.

Jay-Z executively produced the film, soundtrack, and score, so it's not a huge surprise as to why there's so much Jay-Z and Beyonce in the film.

  • Great review! I'm interested to see how I find it after I just read the book - I hadn't heard the best things so to hear some positive things is great nevertheless (despite the negatives). :)

Well, considering the film's score was produced by Jay-Z, I don't see how the film's score would appeal to you anymore than the soundtrack does Shifty I actually really like hip-hop and Jay-Z, but the only two songs from the soundtrack that I felt like fit well in the actual film were the two tracks from The Bryan Ferry Orchestra because those were the only two "true" jazz songs on the entire soundtrack.

  • I adored this movie, everyone did a great job.
Though I only like 2 songs from the soundtrack: Over the Love and Young and Beautiful. Overall the soundtrack kind of let me down. I would rather have it be just the score of the movie, not Jay-z and hip hop/rap songs.
