Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer took place in Paris, the city where Jean-Baptist Grenouille was born. He grew up as an orphan in the same city after his mother was sentenced to death for leaving her infant to rot in the filth in the fisher’s market. By the age of 5, Jean-Baptist was still illiterate but possessed something far greater than words –the ability to trace any scent that anyone could imagine. As he grew older, he went in search for the world’s finest perfume. However, the tables turn when he created his best masterpiece yet.

Directed by Tom Tyker, Perfume was a hands-down riveting display of raw, talented emotion. This 2006 German film brought thrill into new heights. Ben Whishaw, who played the leading man created a new character that was surely original and unique –something quite extraordinary especially when the movie was based on a book. The movie starred a wonderful cast that included Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman and Rachel Hurd-Wood.

It was a hard debate on whether this movie was spectacular or not, considered that this movie did not do so well in America but did very well in Germany. The film gripped the audience’s attention but for how long, we were not sure. Yet, there are only a few talented people that could bring something new to the table for people to watch, and I’m sure that Perfume is sure to be on my list.
