American Mary

American Mary follows the young learning surgeon, Mary Mason. She's an obviously, struggling student when it comes to finances and refuses to accept money from her Nana. Which is understandable when it comes to wanting to be independant. So this leads Mary to seek a job from a strip club which ends up leading to something a little bit more unconventional when the owner's buddy seems to have been stabbed in the eye.

One of the strippers seems to get ahold of Mary's resume and shows up at her house asking for help and offering a lot of cash. Thus leads Mary into the world of body modification.

The film itself is very aesthetically pleasing. I watched it on Netflix so I'm assuming some of the more gory details were cut out (which is upsetting, I'll have to find an uncut version) but from what I can tell it was probably pretty gory. Mary is an easily likeable character. She likes to talk to her bird and practice surgery on chickens while drinking wine. She's cute and has a great sarcastic personality.

Of course things take a turn for the worse for poor Mary when she's invited to a 'surgeon's only party' by one of her instructors and is drugged and raped by her professor. She takes it in stride and then proceeds to get her revenge by practicing all her new found body modification techniques on him.

After this I feel like nothing much happens. She just kind of wanders around and does some interesting surgeries and seems to be getting more and more distanced from herself. Perhaps this has something to do with me getting an edited version of the movie or that's just how it is. After she gets her revenge and starts working with the strip club owner who obviously has a huge crush on Mary, nothing much happens.

The ending is incredibly anticlimactic and utterly disappointing.

I give it a three and a half out of five stars.
