What Is Dexter Morgan Doing?

What Is Dexter Morgan Doing? The name Dexter Morgan can be tricky and shuffling. It quite sounds like a cartoon character; like the name of a mischievous kid who steals lollipops and pulls girls’ braids. As for the TV show called ‘Dexter’ things are - different. Dexter doesn’t steal lollipops. He doesn’t mess with people’s hair. He kills people. And that is what he does best.

The show about a serial killer who kills other serial killers is interlaced with Dexter’s narration and his everyday life. Throughout the series we get to know the secrets from his childhood, the things he has deeply repressed. At the age of 3 he witnessed his mother’s monstrous death, ending up as an orphan. A Miami police officer, Harry Morgan, gave him a permanent family shelter.

As a person who puts bad guys behind bars and meets criminal minds, he recognized Dexter’s passion for thrill killing. Dexter’s twisted mind was eager to fulfill his fantasies. And Harry couldn’t do much. Except for one thing - to point Dexter’s gruesome mind into the other direction - to only kill people who deserve it; vicious people immune to justice.

After his father’s death, he’s left alone with his adoptive sister Debra. Years later, Dexter works for the Miami Metro Police Department along with his sister, only as a blood spatter analyst. As a killer working for the police and vice verse; as a scientist unable to swallow his drive to kill, Dexter’s learned to cover his tracks - he kills without a stain left, while on the other side, while being at work, he’s used to faking normal emotions.

The show resembles the American Psycho movie, where the two-faced leading actor, Patrick Bateman normally does his daily job but at night turns into a sociopathic monster. The two, Dexter and Patrick have the same modus operandi.

But that’s the only thing keeping them together. Dexter is not your every day character - a lack of emotions leads to his coldness, and he doesn’t hesitate. His other job, actually, what he really is, is something that no one can find out about. Michael C. Hall perfectly portrayed Dexter Morgan; seemingly a normal guy. His character is fully developed; and the depth of his thoughts gives a well insight into the mind of a serial killer. But underneath a well glued mask; behind the smiles and nice words, hides something completely different.

Each episode slips away so fast - it leaves you there craving more. Even though he kills people, you somehow end up cheering for him, ‘cause in the end, no matter how controversial it might be, he does good deeds - keeping the innocent safe by killing the bad ones; the ones that have escaped the righteous hand of justice.

The show is something different in the world of tinsel and imitations. The usual stereotypes cannot be found here - you won’t see a bunch of naked teenagers hopping around; a victim scramming into the house while trying to escape the bad guy; a sloppy girl tripping over a rock while running from someone and certainly, you won’t see the police being the last at the crime scene; when everything has already been taken care of.

Numerous awards in its hands have proved the quality of the show. It has surely grabbed me but then again, I’m almost 25 and I can watch it without any restrictions.
