Bunheads

Bunheads is the hit comedy-drama show on ABC Family. The title ‘Bunheads’ comes from the slang term for ballerina because of the buns that ballerinas often wear. The show follows Michelle Simms (played by Sutton Foster), a showgirl in Las Vegas who was once a ballerina. Once Michelle sees that her life and career are at a metaphorical dead-end, she finally takes up the marriage offer from Hubble Flowers (played by Alan Ruck), who has been her long-time admirer for years. The couple quickly (and unromantically) gets married in a church in Vegas and then Michelle leaves her life to move to Hubble’s house in Paradise, California.

Little did Michelle know, Paradise is much more of a sleepy town and uninteresting as expected and her new husband actually lives with his mother, Fanny Flowers (played by Kelly Bishop), on a seven acre estate. Michelle and Fanny do not get along and are distant from each other until a party that Fanny hosts for her son and his new wife. The night of the party, Hubble is killed in a car accident and Michelle and Fanny have to mourn his death.

Through their personal grief, Michelle and Fanny find things to bond over, like their love of dance. Fanny was once a very successful ballerina dancer and once she moved to Paradise with her son, she opened her own dance studio, Paradise Dance Academy. Michelle in turn, becomes a big inspiration to the ballet dancers, Boo, Sasha, Ginny, and Melanie as she helps them with their dancing, and their life.

Bunheads has a very comical but yet very inspirational story to everyone. It shares of how to deal with many varieties of problems and is relatable to almost everyone who watches. Sutton Foster plays a fantastic character filled with wit, charm, humor, and the viewers love her for her self-acclaimed, “general hostility towards the world”. The show has the perfect balance of wonderful writing and classical theme, while still keeping it very modern for adults and children alike.

The show just completed its first season of 10 episodes and the show is expected to continue on for Season 2 very shortly.
