Shingeki no Kyojin - Comments

  • Yeah, I love Japan. They've contributed so many awesome things into this world that living without them would seem a bit... strange to say the least.

  • Those titans were scary as fuck! The motion capture was fucking crazy!
I really hope the LA movie doesn't fall flat like evolution did. Japan is so amazing.

  • I think the movie is in good hands. There's a Japanese Subaru commercial that came out today featuring live-action Titans that takes place in the mountain pass of Wall Maria. The director for the live-action Attack movie played a role in bringing it to life.

^As if Japan couldn't be any more awesome, right? Haha.

They definitely don't change the standards in the trainee corps, as well as the three fractions. It is very refreshing to see that women don't need a man to stand on their own.

I hope the Shingeki isn't anything like evolution. Dragon Ball was what originally got me into anime way back when (I moved on to Sailor Moon afterward) Though it is going to be made by the same director as Dragon Ball: Battle of the Gods.

I don't ship for canon though, I don't have any desire to see any of my ships to be canon in anything to ship. I don't want it at all. I'm for the fanfiction, headcanons, and fanart. But age-gap things never bothered me in fiction, as long as it's healthy and consensual.

It is a little disturbing to see teenagers fighting and dying and they're all so human, its very heartbreaking.

Death Note is definitely at the top of the what next to watch list lol, though my list of manga is longer than my anime list, but I'm definitely going to read it or buy it at some point!

  • I actually don't really follow the whole shipping thing to be honest. I only recently found out about the concept like... a few months ago. lol. It's interesting, but nothing new. I was just surprised that there was a name for it, as well as controversy.

I actually never thought about the age gap either. Once again, you bring up a lot of good points, haha. Good food for thought :) Attack is definitely set in a world that is vastly different from our own. They are in desperate need for fresh troops from what I've seen, so lowering the age gap seems like a no-brainer to me. I mean... it is quite a bit nasty to see these younger kids go to war, but... that's just the grim reality of this world.

"I personally don't see how people can become so wrapped up in a fictional pairing that they could go as far to attack shippers and throw around insulting harmful words like that." Yeah, me neither.

I'm glad to know it stays consistent :) And yes, do watch Death Note when you have the time! I have all three live-action movies, but haven't watched the anime in ages. Nor have I ever read the manga *sigh* I seriously need to fix that... But just a word of warning: the Death Note finale is... freaking intense. No spoilers though.

I'm pretty sick and tired of seeing women in any form of fictional entertainment needing to rely on a man. And you're right, Mikasa has a very, VERY good reason for being over-protective of Eren. I mean, there is no "one size fits all" so if a woman does need to rely on a man, or if a man does need to rely on a woman, and if there is something between their characters that justifies it, than by all means, go for it, IMO. I think people get too caught up with that.

And you're right, going back to what I said about military desperation, anyone would be welcome. And I didn't mean to imply that I think that women shouldn't ever be in the military. If they can pass the same training as men, then great! It's just annoying since they actually lower the standards for women IRL, but that is a completely different topic/can of worms, so I won't go there...

And like the Dragonball Evolution movie turned out to be? Hehe. My friend actually considers the title of that movie to be a swear-word, I kid you not. Every time I mention it around him, he freezes up and crinkles his nose. It's funny.

And I'll definitely be sure to do that! Thanks! :)

First thing I'd like to touch on is shipping because wow, I don't look much into psychology unless it's for research purposes, but I see a lot of people throw around the word 'pedophile/pedophilia' when they describe the Eren/Levi tag, and yeah everyone is entitled to their opinion, but they're throwing around a potentially harmful word and using it incorrectly. Frankly, its a little irritating having to scroll through tons of spam posts and blacklist anti-shippers. The Erwin/Armin tag (another guilty ship of mine) stays pretty much clear of hate because its not really well known. I can't say the same for the Eren/Hanji or the Levi/Mikasa tag but the Eren and Levi tag gets a lot of hate for some reason.

I can see how some people would be turned off to a 15+ year age gap, but we don't know anything about the cultures or customs or what their legal age of consent would be. I'm assuming that since child can enter the military without the need of parental consent, they would be considered an adult around the time they graduated from the trainee corps, so like 15 or so.

I personally don't see how people can become so wrapped up in a fictional pairing that they could go as far to attack shippers and throw around insulting harmful words like that.

I only started watching the show on a whim and it really panned out well for me, and it stays pretty consistent with being an extremely well-thought out plot.

Sadly, I haven't watched Death Note yet, but I'm in the middle of Kuroko no Basuke, Kyoukai no Kanata, and Another. It's on the list though :) but if it's the same director, it should be good.

All the women in the show and manga are incredibly strong, stand alone characters who don't need a male character to hold them up (you could argue that Mikasa is overly-attached to Eren, but not with a very important reason that I can understand perfectly). The thing about women in the military setting is that they're fighting such a strong enemy and anyone willing to fight would gladly be accepted.

The only thing that really, really sucks is that they're won't be a season 2 until 2015, but we get an new OVA in April, and a Live action movie this year, which could be really amazing or really bad like the last avatar movie turned out to be.

After you read the manga, which is excellent by the way, you should consider reading A Choice with No Regrets, which is the spin-off novel for Erwin and Levi's back story.

  • Holy crap, I just started watching this show/listening to the music two days ago. lol. What a happy coincidence (edit: oops... just noticed how old this actually is... *awkwardly looks around*)

I was actually planning on writing a "First Impressions" post for my own personal blog outside of Mibba. There's so much to say about this anime. I love it. I would even go so far as to call it my own personal Breaking Bad, although whether or not the show will remain consistent is up in the air for me... *knocks on wood* Hopefully it will. It's by far my favorite anime since Death Note (same director apparently... oh, the irony).

I also plan on reading the manga after I'm done watching the show...

Great article by the way. You touched on a bunch of points that a lot of other people don't when talking about this show. At least, I think so.

And I'm glad the women in this are strong, even though I haven't reached a point in the anime to know how strong. Although, Mikasa's levelheadedness in the beginning was a pretty good indicator. And although it's not really realistic to have women be top of their class in a military setting, this IS fantasy, and I'm glad they realized that, because that just means we get physically strong women out on the battlefield who can kick butt. But once again, I'm not that far into the show so I don't know what they do really.

    Finally, this...

"If you ship anything, be prepared for attacks on your pairing for people who take fictional realms, characters, and relationships way too seriously."

...should probably be a warning put on all reviews of this nature :P hehe...
