Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) started off as a Japanese manga series on September 9, 2009 and was collected into fourteen tankobon volumes.

Plot

It was said that a hundred years prior to the story, giant creatures known as Titans appeared and pushed mankind to the brink of extinction. Humanity lives inside cities surrounded by walls as a defense to repopulate and find a way to rid the world of their known enemies.

The towering walls consist of three parts. The outermost is Wall Maria, the middle, Wall Rose and the innermost, Wall Shena consist of how humans have lived hundreds of years in peace with many not ever seeing a Titan at its full potential.

Eren Yeager, adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and friend Armin Arlert are one day caught off guard when their hometown inside of Wall Maria is breached by a 200 foot Titan which allows smaller yet deadlier ones inside to feast upon citizens. As the military police are desperately evacuating people from Wall Maria to Wall Rose, Eren finds himself watching the horrors of his mother being eaten by a Titan.

While Eren, Mikasa and Armin manage to save themselves, Eren vows to enlist as one within the military police and avenge his mother's death by killing Titan's. Through the bulk of this story, it seems as if even the individual Wall's have secrets with each coming division that even Eren befalls. Out of fate or karma, that remains a mystery.

Overall

I'm a sucker for dark fantasy and post apocalyptic stories. Good or bad, I'll always go through with watching an anime, but I marathoned Attack on Titan in literally two days. Though it's a twenty-five episode series, it holds enough suspense to keep you on edge.

Character development was absolute key. It was obvious to see how Eren started off with hate and a thirst for vengeance after witnessing his mother's horrid death. Seeing him go through this phase of acting like he was invincible was something I could relate to. It's the need to jump in head first without thinking of the consequences or the aftermath.

The side characters consisting of not only his adopted sister Mikasa and friend Armin really expressed the depth of this war between humans and Titans. The fact that these people are in a war shows the real purpose of why this anime was so heartwrenchingly wonderful. Not every battle came out to a victory. Many individuals that were close to others died and it seemed as if no one would ever win in all honesty.

Without spoiling anything for anyone, I'll have to state that the plot twists are just fabulous and I think this anime should be watched by all anime lovers. Plus the re-watch value is pretty high on my list.
