Hazel is from a poor family from South London. Her family have all emigrated to Australia and she has little contact with them. She's just lost her job - from being too good at it and making everyone else look bad - and about to be evicted. Her grandmother is about to leave for Scotland but asks Hazel to housesit for her while she's away. But when a strange occurance takes place at the Cork house, and Leon Cork takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of the mystery, she is dragged into the thick of a thrilling mixture of deceit, *** and strange clues. Leon Cork goes to her old place of work for some clues and hears about Hazel, a clever girl who was into strange stories and mysteries so he looks her up. Hazel is bright, prone to muse things over and not one for frills and fancy, unlike Leon. She's reluctant to get involved with Leon's case as she believes that most ***s these days are just coldhearted and have no trance of elegance about them at all.
