Jael is the main female character/heroine of Start Living Now. She grew up with her grandfather on the Quinault Indian Nation Reservation in Taholah, Washington after her parents died in a car crash. She was once the Alpha Female and leader of the wolf pack on the reservation, but was forced to flee to northern Washington after a rebellion occurred. An observant, wise, and powerful shapeshifter, Jael has been known to be untrustful towards others until they prove themselves to her. She can shift into a golden-grey wolf and a golden eagle.

The lead male character in Start Living Now. The Alpha Male of the second wolf pack on the Quileute Reservation at La Push. His relationship with Renesme has been stressed lately thanks to Renesme's attatchment to Nahuel. As a result, Jacob has become temperamental and sullen. After saving Jael from a hunter and nursing her back to health with the help of the Cullens and the wolf pack, he slowly begins to fall in love with her. But when something happens to Renesme and Jacob is torn between the two women who mean the most to him, is there any way that things will work out for him?

The first member of the Quinault wolf pack to shift. Was once the Alpha Male until Jael, the rightful leader, Shifted. Niko always appears to be charming and charismatic, but has an ulterior motive behind everything he does. He and Jael were once lovers, but once Niko saw that she could be used to gain power, he rebelled against her. At the moment, he is still searching for Jael so that he can challenge her and assume the role of the Alpha of the wolf pack.

The Quinault Wolf Pack
The wolf pack of the Quinault Indian Nation. Niko currently serves as the temporary Alpha. Many followed him during the rebellion. Those who opposed him were killed or injured. Its members include: Elijah: Quick-minded and in Jael's opinion, the perfect example of someone who had both brain and brawn. Xavier: An excellent scout and fighter. Sara, Jackson and Kenai: Siblings who bicker constantly. Memdi: In Jael's opnion, she is the bitterest person in the world. A pessimist at heart, Memdi is also realistic about things at the same Yuma: The strongest of the wolf pack, and Jael's closest friend. The only one besides Jael who was able to shift into two forms; a wolf and a stag. Jael thinks of him often, and misses him terribly. Could there be more to their relatoinship than meets the eye? Pauchu’a and Tapti: The youngest brother and sister of the pack. Always eager to please, the two are great at scouting and chasing.

The Quileute Wolf Pack
The wolf pack of the Quileute Tribe at La Push. Containing two seperate packs that act as one, the pack includes: Sam Uley: The Alpha of the original wolf pack. He is engaged to Emily. Quil Ateara: One of Jacob Black's best friends and the only member of the pack besides Jacob who imprinted on an infant. Embry Call: One of Jacob's best friends and possible half brother of Quil, Jacob, or Sam. Paul: The most volatile member of the pack, he was prone to angry outbursts, but has mellowed out after imprinting on Jacob's sister. Jared: Known as the joker of the group, Jared has eyes like binoculars. Seth Clearwater: Leah's younger brother and a friendly guy. He enjoys spending time with Jael and his sister. Leah Clearwater: she becomes Jael's best friend and confidant. Although she is still conflicted about he rfeelings towards Sam, Leah has become more focused on trying to be fertile while remaining a werewolf, thanks to the encouragement of Jael. Brady and Collin: The youngest members of the pack.

The Cullen Family
The caretakers of Jael after her accident. As a result, several of its members are very close to Jael. Carlisle and Esme: The leaders and adoptive parents of the family. Carlisle treated Jael for all of her injuries. Edward and Bella: The parents of Renesme. Although they are aware of the stressed relationship between their daughter and Jacob, they refuse to get involved unless things get out of hand. Alice and Jasper: The close friends of Jael. Alice has always been a reassuring friend, while Jasper helps Jael control her emotions. Emmett and Rosalie: Rosalie dislikes any of the neighboring shapeshifters, especially Jael, and openly refuses to associate with them. Emmett and Jael have a strong relationship and are good friends, but lately Emmett has been giving Jael mixed signals. What could he be up to?

Renesme Cullen and Nahuel
As the imprint of Jacob, Renesme has been preferring the company of Nahuel lately. It seems as if she thinks of Jacob as a friend and not a lover, much to Jacob's displeasure. She toys with the emotions of both Nahuel and Jacob, which causes Jacob to sulk and Nahuel to become frustrated. She and Jael heavily dislike each other.
