Ariana Adams is an introvert who suffers from severe depression. She's experienced a lot in her life, even from a young age. She moves to Pittsburgh at the age of 20, where her cousin Craig takes her into his care. Ariana chooses to think, rather than to speak out of fear people will judge her. She's very smart, she likes to study philosophy and she loves to read, just like her cousin. She believes that all humans are born to hate and she has been raised to not trust anyone, even her own family.

James Neal has just been traded to Pittsburgh with His friend Matt Niskanen, all the way from Dallas. He's trying his hardest to fit in with this foreign city, but it's hard for him when he has nobody to help him. He can be quiet at times, but he's not afraid to say what is on his mind. James can be very protective when it comes to his friends and family, he refuses to let anyone insult the people he loves and would do anything to protect them. He meets Ariana and is intrigued by her quiet attitude and he wants to get to know her more, but she just shuts him out of her life. James refuses to give up, he's going to do anything to get Ariana to open up to him.

Craig Adams took Ariana under his wing after she was kicked out of her home with nowhere to go. Craig is the only person in Ariana's life who really knows what her past is like and the reason as to why her depression is so severe. They both get in fights a lot, and sometimes he says some really harsh things to her. Though he probably won't ever admit it, he has a huge soft spot for her, and looks after her like a sister.
